We have taken pictures related with beautiful and kitsch. Observation is an important part of engineering. An engineer also should be aware of problems around him or her. Because engineers solve problems. And to solve them they first should be aware of them. To solve problem and construct a solution process for a problem engineers need to collect datas. And ı think this taking picture exercise's aim is to make us aware and to teach us how to make observations. And then what can we learn from them. I think this is the abstraction part of this exercise.

What does sequential mean?
Sequential generally means succesive. In a process all stages of process are sequential. So a process has not got only one stage. People ,who want to solve problems related with processes and systems, should know the sequential structure of the system. Industrial engineers should decide the most effective way of designing of a system. So they should organize all stages of process properly
What does iterative mean?
The word iterative means repetitive generally. However the other meaning of iterative is cyclical. According to another source it can be defined as a systematic process for system development that is recommended for use in creating DSS ( Decision Support Systems).Iteration also used in project management and software development. Waterfall approach is often compared with this approach which is related with iteration
What does a life circle mean?
Life circle generally means a time period from beginning to the conclusion of a product, system or a business. For a system life cycle means the time from beginning of the system to the replacement of the system. The term life cycle can be used for all organisms. So it can be used for systems and businesses too because systems or businesses can change with time too. As a result life circle generally can be assessed as a period of time which last from beginning to the conclusion for a system , a business or an organism.
What is a process?
Process is a orginized set of activities. It also is a time period which is naturally occuring or designed order of changes of properties of a system. Process management, process control and process evaluation are important work areas of industrial engineers. As a result process is order of changes of an object or a system, which can be seen by using scientific method. For solution of a problem engineers should develop a process too. Moreover industrial engineers should save time and money when they are solving problems.That's why they should be good at process development,management and control.
What is an event?
There are a lot of different definitions of event. But event is generally something that happens at a given time and a given place. However according to probability theory and event is a set of results to which a probability is assigned.That means when there is a finite space and subset of these space is an event. As a result event is simply means an occurrance. But it must be at a given time and a given place according to the definition. In the probability theory any subset of a finite space is an event. However philosophers have not reached a certain definition for the word event.
What does relevance mean?
Relevance generally means relation of something to the matter at hand. It can be ussed to describe some information and show how connected and pertinent they are. Relevance is important because to solve a problem we need to identify the relevant elements of the problem. As a result relevance is important because engineers should see the relevance and connection between different situations and problems to construct a solution
What does reliability mean?
When a system gives same results after it has simulated repeatedly, it means that is reliable. Reliability generally means the consistency between the repeated results of an experiment or a system. But to measure reliability of a system the structure of the system should not be changed. As a result reliability generally means dependability and trustworthiness of a system.
What does significance mean?
Significance generally means importance of meaningful consequences. Another definition for significance is that significance is the quality of being significant or having a meaning.But it is generally means the real meaning of something and importance of it.
What does validation mean?
Validation is a process which determines consistency of a system or a business. To provide validation data which are predicted and which are gained after simulation should be compared. They should be consistent. Or, validation can be assessed as the act of verifying that a product or service meet the requirements for which it was intended. Validation is an important part of a system because of verification of the system.
What is waterfall diagram?
Waterfall diagram is a popular version of system development life cycle model. The waterfall method describes a linear and sequential method. This method has a distinct aim. Moreover it can not turn back like a waterfall. Waterfall development allows a managerial control and departmentalization. These are the advantages of this method. However there are some disadvanteges of these method too. For example it does not allow reflection and revision. This method can not be interfered after it designed. That is the most important disadvantage of this method.
What is snowball effect?
Snowball effect is a term for a process which is building up on itself. This process gets larger over itself. However it can be dangerous potentially. Because when it is getting larger, it will be more difficult to control it. Also when a process is getting larger, it’s the acceleration of getting larger increases too. Therefore it will be more difficult to control it. As a result snowball effect can be dangerous in business life because of uncontrolled growth.
What is a model?
A model generally means representation of something. A model sometimes can be a toy car or a person. In macroeconomics a model is designed to simulate an operation in business life. Model are tried for preventing or fixing errors. Models are also using in computer technologies too. (3D modeling). For industrial engineering, model of system is used for simulate this system and check and fix errors.

Like planning, organizing, staffing and directing control is one of the managerial functions too. However controlling is a very important function because it helps to check errors and fix them. On the other hand controlling is important because even if there is no error in the system, there should be precaution in order to prevent forming errors. According to Henry Fayol control consists of verifying whether everything occurs in conformity with the plan adopted, the instructions issued, and principles established. It objects to point out weaknesses and errors in order to rectify them and prevent recurrence. Control also can be defined as adjust all stages of a plan and check them for specific aim. As a result, controlling is an important part of system approach and an important area of industrial engineering.
What is plan?
A plan is used for getting one set of circumstances to another. Plans are used for moving from present situation to another one which is aimed. Plans can be used in careers, diplomacy, economic development…A plan is more detailed than a strategy. Plans are used by many different areas like architecture too. Plans are used for improving the situation in business life and doing it in a more effective way. That’s why planning is one the jobs which are done by industrial engineers. In conclusion in business life, plans generally are used for getting one set of circumstances to better one and it is more detailed and more complex than a strategy. Moreover production planning, capacity requirements planning, manufacturing resource planning, material requirements planning are different types of plans which are done by industrial engineers.

What is strategy?
The word strategy derives from the word strategos which is a Greek word. Strategos also derives from two words stratos(army) and ago(leading). In the age of Athenian Democracy the word strategos referred to military commander. The word strategy actually comes from military. The definition of strategy which is related with military science is that strategy is a branch of military science dealing with command, planning and conduct of a war. The most simple definition of the strategy is that strategy is a systematic plan to accomplish a special aim or result. However strategies generally design for long term aims. Thomas Kuhn defined paradigm as what is to be observed and scrutinized. But it is the scientific definition of paradigm. It can also be defined as a set of assumptions , concepts, values, and practices constituting a view of reality.I think that is a beter definition for paradigm. Paradigm also can be assessed as a model of something. So paradigm has not got a certain definition. There are lots of different definition for paradigm. As a result everything ,which we used for constituting a view of reality, is a paradigm.
What does hypothesis mean?
Generally hypothesis is a well-tested explanation. But it is not the same as theory. A hypothesis also is a proposal intended explain certain facts or observations. A hypothesis has aim of verify something scientificly too. A hypothesis should be base on a theory but it must be more tested than a theory. According to NASA a hypothesis is possible explanation of an experiment’s results. Creating hypothesis is a step of scientific method too. However hypothesis is more certain than a theory.

Problem is generally defined as any question or matter which is involving doubt uncertainty or difficulty. Moreover it can be defined as a question which is proposed for a solution or discussion. According to some other sources a problem makes difficult to accomplish a desired goal. Also, a problem is a situation which is yet unresolved.
